Enjoy 100% natural snow close to Hotel Lercher
Just 15 minutes by car from Murauer Gasthof Hotel Lercher, you can enjoy amazing natural snow on the Frauenalpe! The ski lifts are closed, but the region is still perfect for a winter getaway. The natural snow creates ideal conditions for snowshoeing and ski touring.
Frauenalpe is nestled in the "Murauer Mountains" right above the historic district town of Murau.
When you get back to Murauer Gasthof Hotel Lercher, you'll be pampered with a massage in the wellness area.
Snowshoeing on Frauenalpe
If you can't reach certain spots on the deeply snow-covered Frauenalpe with regular shoes, snowshoes will definitely get you there! And the best part? You don't need any prior experience at all. Just strap on your snowshoes and off you go into the beautiful winter wonderland. You can rent all the gear at the Kreischberg valley station (which is about 30 minutes from Frauenalpe).
If you prefer hiking up the mountain with a group, you can join our guided snowshoe tours. You'll be accompanied by local experts and other participants. You'll even get your snowshoe equipment at the start of the hike, so no need to rent anything extra beforehand!
Snowshoeing around Hotel Lercher
Discover Styrian nature in a totally new way! The natural snow paradise Frauenalpe, nestled between the Niedere Tauern and Nockberge mountains, is the perfect starting point for your snowshoe adventures.
Just follow the cleared mountain road for about 8 km, and you'll reach Murau's local mountain. Bundled up in warm winter clothes, you can kick off your winter adventure in the wide-open, untouched nature, far from all the daily hustle and bustle. You can park your car safely right at the Murauer Hütte and start your journey.
This age-old, rediscovered way of getting around opens up so many possibilities! Whether you're a curious beginner or an experienced pro, the sparkling trails will guide you to your destination. You'll wander through snowy forests and trek across open alpine meadows. If you're lucky, you might even spot some wildlife, like a hopping hare, a shy deer, or a quick chamois. Just follow the tracks on the soft, snowy slopes. You can customize your tours to the summit and beyond, exactly how you like them. Take a deep breath of that crisp winter air! And to top it all off, don't forget to pop into the cozy Murauer Hütte.
Whether you're new to it or a seasoned pro, the Suli Snowboard School offers half-day guided snowshoe hikes between Christmas and Easter. You'll get your snowshoes and poles right from them, and to warm up afterwards, there's even a mulled wine! The Wirnsberger Ski School also has daily guided snowshoe and winter hikes, depending on what the weather is doing.
Ski touring on Frauenalpe
Since the ski slope isn't used for downhill skiing anymore, all winter sports fans can now explore ski tours both along and off the former piste. If you're trying ski touring for the first time, you'll find the perfect route on Frauenalpe. And don't worry, even experienced winter adventurers will find plenty to love in this winter wonderland!
Good to know for ski touring newbies
Before you head out on your tour, always make sure to check the weather conditions and the avalanche report. And of course, you absolutely need to have the right gear with you, so don't forget these essentials:
- Ski helmet
- Emergency gear: avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel
- Ski backpack with extra clothes, snacks, and plenty of water
Just a quick final tip! If you're new to this, it's best not to pick the longest and toughest route right away. Going downhill in tricky conditions can really tire you out fast. So, play it safe and start with shorter, easier tours at first.
