Carinthia's oldest town
The medieval town of Friesach is about a 45-minute drive from Murauer Gasthof Hotel Lercher.
Friesach, a medieval bishop's seat located right on the border between Carinthia and Styria, is actually Carinthia's oldest town! It's super unique because it's surrounded by Austria's only town moat that's always filled with water. With the Petersberg castle complex and that cool moat, the whole area is just perfect for lots of medieval events.
At the display camp run by the Medieval Friesach association, you can see what life might have been like back in the Middle Ages. The monastery's orchard turns into a medieval tent camp, bustling with groups from Vienna, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, Styria, and even Slovenia!
Head to the big market square and you'll find traders and craftspeople from all over the place.
The Friesach Castle Courtyard Plays are super famous, even beyond the region! They happen in the upper part of the Petersberg castle complex. Local amateur actors from Friesach perform classic world literature right there on the castle courtyard stage.
