Discover the many cross-country ski trails around the picturesque town of Murau. As you move in the fresh air, gliding over the sparkling white carpet of snow, you'll strengthen your whole body, from your upper body to your core and legs. The crunching snow under your skis, the bright sun in the sky, and the rustling wind in the trees will help you relax and unwind.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced cross-country skier, you can choose from 21 different trails – long, challenging, or short and sweet – to glide silently through the snowy winter landscape. 180 km of groomed trails for both skate and classic skiers invite you to arrive, enjoy, and recharge your batteries.
Winter vacation at Hotel Lercher in Murau
When you return to the Murauer Gasthof Hotel Lercher, you can warm up with a sauna visit in the cozy wellness area. At dinner in Lercher's Restaurant, you'll be spoiled with Styrian cuisine and a variety of Austrian delights. Of course, a glass of wine from the wine cellar or a sip of Murauer beer at our wooden bar is a must.
Cross-country skiing tips for the Murau region
Weirerteich Cross-Country Skiing Centre in Laßnitz
This cross-country skiing paradise lets you enjoy this gentle sport on a total of 14 km, spread across 3 double-tracked sections with different difficulty levels. The trails are freshly groomed every day! Starting from the Freizeit-Wirt in Steirisch Laßnitz, the first section is 6.1 km long, taking you to the Auen turn-off and back. The second section from there is just 4 km to the Weirerteich. From the "Setz di nieder" snack station at Weirerteich, the third section heads towards St. Lambrecht and back. They've even installed a snowmaking system along this loop! Twice a week, you can also hit the floodlit trail in the evening and enjoy a peaceful glide through the snowy winter wonderland. And if you're feeling competitive, you can test your aiming skills at the biathlon range with expert help on Wednesdays and Sundays.
You'll find parking at the "Setz di nieder" snack station and at the Freizeit-Wirt in Steirisch Laßnitz.The Sport Maier Nordic Shop, located right where the trail starts at Weirerteich, has rental gear and cross-country skiing lessons available.
Murau - Stadium Cross-Country Loop
You can hop onto this trail right by the stadium and outdoor pool in Murau. It's a challenging training trail, about 2 km long, with two tracks, and perfect for skating. You'll find parking in the ski jump area.
St. Lorenzen / St. Georgen - High-Altitude Trail
Take the Kreischberg Gondola up to the mountain station, and you'll find the start of the high-altitude trail there. This cross-country trail is about 2.5 km long and is considered medium difficulty. You'll love the amazing views from 1,700 m above sea level as you glide through the Zirben forests on Kreischberg, either in classic or skating style. There's parking available at the valley station.
St. Lorenzen / St. Georgen - Trail by the Golf Course
You can start this trail and find parking right at the Golfrestaurant Pfiff. It's 3.5 km long, and even beginners can enjoy gliding along on cross-country skis here.
St. Lorenzen / St. Georgen - Murtal Trail
Starting from the Lutzmannsdorf Bridge, this easy to medium cross-country trail stretches for 10 km along the Mur Cycle Path all the way to Stadl an der Mur. Plus, you'll find smaller loops off into the meadows next to the main track. You can park at the bridge, next to the ice stock rink, and at the Bräuhauser Fam. Pichler Paul snack station in Stadl an der Mur.
From Ranten to Seebach
Along the way, you'll find plenty of places to start and park, like at Löwenwirt, Trattenbauer, or Hornwirt in Seebach. This 6 km double-tracked trail offers loads of cross-country fun and amazing views of the surrounding mountains, from Preber all the way to Greim. It's an easy to medium difficulty, perfect for anyone who just wants to enjoy the ride.
High-Altitude Trail at the Foot of Preber
You'll find your starting point right where Styrian Krakau meets Salzburger Lungau. At 1,500m above sea level at the foot of Preber, you can glide through the snowy, gently rolling alpine meadows. This double-tracked trail is sure to get any cross-country skier excited! You can start and park at the Ludlalm.
Cross-Country Ski Trail at Lachtal
Nestled in the beautiful winter wonderland of Lachtal, you can enjoy a 2.5 km double-tracked loop. You'll find the start and parking at the Lachtal ski resort parking lot.

Tobogganing in the Murau Kreischberg Region
Natural Tobogganing
Whether you're going uphill or downhill, the region will surprise you with its natural toboggan runs nestled in the Niedere Tauern and Nockberge mountains. You can easily reach your starting points, surrounded by the magical winter landscape. Depending on your mood, you can tackle the climb on foot, with a drag lift, or by shuttle. Some trails are even lit up at night, offering a fun change of pace. Casually hop on your toboggan and race downhill at top speed. Snow sprays up in the turns from the sharp runners. Your joyful laughter can be heard far and wide.
Get active and go on a journey of discovery through our winter wonderland in the Murau region. Breathe in the fresh mountain air on a ski tour in the Niedere Tauern and Nockberge mountains. Stroll leisurely through the glittering winter world or gain some altitude with snowshoes. At Kreischberg and Lachtal, the slopes invite you to zoom downhill on skis or a snowboard. Tips for Toboggan Runs
Uphill Tobogganing Experience on Zirbitzkogel
With this unique experience, you can toboggan uphill from the Tonnerhütte using a drag lift designed for sleds. Once you reach the top, you have 4 different toboggan runs to choose from for your descent, ranging from 1,000 to 1,500m in length. On selected dates, this fun activity also takes place at night.
Parking, rental, and refreshment options are available right at the Tonnerhütte.
Lachtal Natural Toboggan Run
Whether on foot or by toboggan taxi (+43 3581 8455), you can head up to the Hirzmann Alm. The romantic winter landscape is especially captivating under moonlight.

A Cozy Winter Day in the Murau Region
The aroma of delicious coffee gently wakes you from your dreams. You slip out from under your cozy blanket. Once dressed, you head to the restaurant. The breakfast buffet, brimming with homemade delights, is waiting for you. Your mouth is already watering. You leisurely try one delicious item after another.
Feeling refreshed, you drive to the Weirerteich Cross-Country Skiing Center. You take the opportunity to strengthen your body holistically. Right at the starting station, you rent some skis. Mr. Meier from the rental shop gives you a little tip before you start your round. You slowly glide over the white glittering carpet, making your way along the perfectly groomed cross-country ski trails. You listen intently to the crunch of the snow under your skis and the rustling of the wind in the trees. The movement makes you feel alive. Curiously, you watch a few sports enthusiasts trying their hand at biathlon. When you return your skis, Mr. Meier invites you to the annual “Ladies Cross-Country Skiing and Yoga Days” in January. To round off your cozy day, you enjoy a warming glass of tea at the "Setz di nieder" snack station.
The afternoon gets sporty
In the afternoon, grab your kids and let's go! Bundled up in warm winter clothes, armed with gloves and helmets, you're off to go sledding. You'll reach your starting point without much effort. The excitement is huge! Who will be first? One child and one adult hop onto each sled. And off you go! The sled slowly picks up speed. You'll take one curve after another, skillfully passing a few others all the way down to the valley. Snow sprays from the runners, and your joyful laughter can be heard far and wide.
Once you've settled into your cozy room at the Gasthof and Hotel, you look out the window. It slowly starts to snow. One little snowflake after another. After a while, the snowfall gets heavier, and the snowflakes start to dance wildly. Your windowsill gets covered with a soft white blanket. Slowly, you feel your cold toes coming back to life. A hot bath will feel wonderful. Once you're warmed up, you'll be pampered at Lercher’s Restaurant. You're already excited to see what delicacies await you! As a special treat, the hosts will whisk you away for a little drink in the wine cellar.
