Murau's local mountain is a fantastic viewpoint for everyone, big or small. This easy hike takes you through mostly treeless terrain on forest and alpine paths. As you walk, you'll see cows peacefully grazing on both sides of the trail – don't worry, just keep a respectful distance. After all, they wouldn't want to be disturbed while they're eating either!

In the colorful meadows, you'll discover lots of different grasses and flowers. If you catch a strong, spicy scent in the summer months, you're probably on the trail of the medicinal plant Speick. This unassuming plant is quite popular, especially for its balancing effects. Along the path, you'll pass by a fenced-off area of Swiss pines. Isn't it amazing how much longer this beautiful tree takes to grow compared to a spruce?

The crystal-clear and ice-cold spring by the path will give you a boost for the final stretch. Once you reach the summit, you'll find the cozy Bernhard Festhütte (an unmanaged alpine club hut) and the small Apollonia Chapel. Every first Sunday in August, a mountain mass is held on the Frauenalm. To help you get your bearings, there's a beautiful stone table at the summit showing the different peaks in the area. In late summer, why not try descending via the Salzsteigweg? You can snack on blueberries and cranberries all the way to the spring. And of course, no mountain trip is complete without stopping for a bite to eat!

Tip: Visit the rustic Murauer Hütte.

The best time for this hike is from May to October, or even in November if the weather's good – it all depends on the weather conditions.
